Tiling & Marbling

Where tiling in the bathroom used to be just a simple splash back along the bath and the washbasin, tiling today’s sophisticated bathrooms is far more complex.

Glazed, fired, porcelain and marble are the main materials presently marketed on the tiles home front, partially covering the two/three walls adjacent to the bath and shower are or covering the bath and shower area, all the walls for aesthetic purposes and then … also the floor.

With the considerable costs of materials and labour when ‘marbling’, (tiling all walls and floor) consideration has to be given, not only to the condition of the plastered walls: whether just making sure that the plaster is in good enough condition to stay on the walls, or on the basis of “if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing it well”, go the whole hog and re-plaster everything and make sure that the room is square.

Floor tiling is different, first a solid base of WPB (special waterproof plywood board) has to be laid either onto the original floor base, or if that is perished, as that is often the case, directly onto the bare joists; at this time, if required, the under floor heating mat is positioned and only then the tiles are laid with the application of a special waterproof compound.
